During winter, the last thing you want is to turn on your air conditioner only to not have it heat your home properly. If your system is running but the room still feels cold, or the air coming from the vents isn't as warm as expected, there could be a number of reasons why.
Heat pump air conditioners work by transferring heat from outside air into your home. While this process is highly efficient, issues with the system, settings, airflow or outdoor conditions can affect how well it heats. Before assuming your air conditioner needs replacing, here are some of the most common reasons it may not be heating properly.
Check your air conditioner settings
It may sound simple, but incorrect settings are one of the first things worth checking. Make sure your air conditioner is set to HEAT rather than COOL, FAN or AUTO, and check that the temperature you've selected is higher than the current room temperature.
If your system has been switched between heating and cooling, it can also take a few minutes before you notice warm air coming from the indoor unit.
Your fan setting can make a difference too. If the fan is set to a high speed, the air may feel less warm because it is being circulated more quickly. Try using the AUTO fan setting and allow the system time to reach the desired temperature.
Your air conditioner may be in defrost mode
During winter, you may occasionally notice your air conditioner stops producing warm air for several minutes. This doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem.
When operating in heating mode, the outdoor unit can become cold enough for frost or ice to form. To prevent this from affecting performance, the system automatically enters a defrost cycle. During this time, heating may temporarily stop while the outdoor unit clears the frost.
A short interruption is normal. However, if your system is entering defrost mode very frequently or remaining in it for an unusually long time, it may indicate an issue that needs to be looked at.
Dirty filters can restrict airflow
One of the most common causes of poor heating is restricted airflow. Over time, dust, dirt and other particles can accumulate on your air conditioner's filters. When the filters become clogged, less air can move through the system, making it harder for your air conditioner to heat the room.
Check your indoor unit's filters and clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions. How often they need cleaning will depend on factors such as how frequently you use your system, whether you have pets and the amount of dust in your home.
Regular filter cleaning is also important for maintaining good indoor air quality and helping your air conditioner operate efficiently.
The outdoor unit could be blocked
Your outdoor unit needs adequate airflow to operate correctly. Leaves, branches, dirt and other debris can build up around the unit and restrict the movement of air.
Check the area surrounding the outdoor unit and make sure it isn't obstructed. Don't attempt to dismantle or repair the unit yourself, but keeping the surrounding area clear can help maintain airflow.
In coastal areas, outdoor air conditioning units can also be exposed to salt air, humidity and other environmental conditions that may contribute to corrosion and wear over time.
There could be a refrigerant problem
Heat pump air conditioners rely on refrigerant to transfer heat. If the system has a refrigerant leak or another issue affecting the refrigerant circuit, its ability to heat your home can be significantly reduced.
Low refrigerant isn't something you should try to fix yourself. Refrigerant systems need to be inspected and serviced by a qualified air conditioning technician. If your air conditioner is blowing cool or lukewarm air, struggling to reach the temperature you've selected or behaving differently from normal, professional servicing may be required.
Your air conditioner may need a service
Like any mechanical system, an air conditioner can develop faults or lose efficiency over time. Components such as fans, sensors, electrical connections and other internal parts can affect heating performance if they aren't operating correctly.
If you've checked the settings and filters and your air conditioner is still not heating properly, it's worth having the system professionally inspected. A technician can identify the underlying problem rather than simply treating the symptoms.

Is your air conditioner the right size?
If your air conditioner has always struggled to heat your home, you might have an undersized unit. An undersized unit may struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature, particularly during colder weather.
Factors such as the size and layout of your home, insulation, windows, ceiling height and exposure to outdoor temperatures all influence how much heating capacity you need.
If you've recently renovated, added rooms or changed the layout of your home, it may also be worth assessing whether your existing system is still suitable.
When should you call an air conditioning technician?
If your air conditioner isn't heating properly, start by checking the mode, temperature setting and filters. Give the system some time to operate and remember that occasional defrost cycles are normal.
However, if the problem persists, your system is making unusual noises, repeatedly shutting down, producing very little airflow or failing to reach the temperature you've selected, call your local air conditioning technician.
Trying to diagnose or repair electrical or refrigerant components yourself can be dangerous and may cause further damage to the system.
