Choosing an air conditioner for your home can be tricky if you’re not exactly sure what to look for. We find it’s sometimes easier when you know what rooms you want to cool or heat, and then we take it from there. So, we’ve put together a few common scenarios to help determine which air conditioning system is going to be best for you and your needs.
Deciding what rooms to condition
There are a few aspects to consider before installing an air conditioner such as size of room, placement and the outside area. However, we’re going to focus on the rooms you want to condition. This may be one bedroom, multiple rooms, or a whole two level house.
One bedroom
Scenario
‘I’m just looking to have one room in my home air conditioned. Ideally, this would be my bedroom as I spend most of my time here’.
If you live in a small home, or it’s just you and your partner, you may only wish to put an air conditioner in the bedroom. This may be because it’s the hottest room of the house, or you just want to make sure you always get a good night's sleep whether it be summer or winter.
For one room of the house, a split system air conditioner will be best. A split system has one indoor unit and one outdoor unit.
Benefits of a split system
Some benefits of a split system air conditioner include:
Quiet to run
Easy to maintain
Very cost effective
The lounge room, study and bedroom
Scenario
‘I’d really like to have air conditioning in a few rooms of the home. The lounge room and bedroom, as this is where we spend most of our time relaxing. And as we are spending more time working from home now, we’d like to have an air conditioner in the study too’.
If you’re looking to have an air conditioner in multiple rooms, a multi-head split system is for you! A multi-head split system is going to be best as this type of system allows you to have multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor unit.
A great feature of a multi-head split system is you are able to control the temperature for each room individually. That means, if a person in the lounge room wants one temperature, and you wish to have another temperature in the bedroom, this is completely doable.
Benefits of a multi-head system
The benefits of a multi-head system include:
Only having one outdoor unit, saving you space outside of your house
Units can be independently controlled
Extremely energy efficient
Your room and two kids bedrooms
Scenario
‘My wife and I have two kids. We were thinking about getting an air conditioner installed in our bedroom, but the kids rooms get really hot in the summertime too. It would be best to have three separate air conditioners installed’.
A multi-head system will apply in this situation too as you are wanting to condition multiple rooms.
The whole house
Scenario
‘I am looking to have air conditioning throughout my whole house. My house is two stories. Although, I’d really like the ability to be able to turn the air conditioning off in the rooms we aren’t using’.
If you’re looking to have air conditioning throughout the whole house, a ducted air conditioning system is going to be ideal. A ducted system acts as a whole home solution. You’ll be able to distribute conditioned air throughout the entire home, while also having the ability to turn the air on and off in certain rooms using zones.
Benefits of a ducted system
There are many benefits of a ducted system. Some of these include:
The ability to cool or heat different rooms at different times
An entire home can be cooled quickly
You don’t have to visit each individual room to turn on the air conditioning
You don’t like the look of an air conditioning unit
Scenario
‘I’ve just renovated my home but I’m really wishing I decided to have air conditioning installed. However, I really don’t like the look of air conditioning units. Is there something that can compliment the look of my new home’?
In this case, a ducted air conditioning system would be best too. A ducted system consists of one indoor unit installed either in the ceiling or underneath the floor. There will also be one outdoor unit. Having the indoor unit hidden in the ceiling or floor means it won’t mess up the aesthetic of your home.
You’ll also have the option to pick out the look of the vents or diffusers. You can go for a round style, bar grill or even a timber finish on your floor grills, to name a few.
