Choosing an air conditioner for your home can be exciting, but it can also be confusing. There are many different factors to think about such as what rooms or spaces you want to cool, what brand to choose and what type of air conditioning system is going to suit you and your needs best. If you’re thinking you want to cool two or more rooms of the house, multi-head split system air conditioning could be for you.
What is a multi-head split system?
A multi-head split system is similar to a split system, but it has one outdoor unit connected to two or more indoor units. This type of air conditioning system is ideal if you are wanting to condition more than one room. A multi-head system works well when the rooms are quite close together and is a great solution for when a ducted system won’t work with a home design.
Benefits of a multi-head split system air conditioner
Multi-head split systems have many benefits. From being able to independently control the units to saving space, we’ve compiled the advantages below.
Good for larger homes
Multi-head split systems are great for larger homes as you can have more than one indoor unit connected to the outdoor unit. Depending on which model of air conditioner you choose, you could have 8 indoor units connected to the one outdoor unit!
They are a space saver
Since you only need one outdoor unit, you dramatically save space outside of your house. It’s also a much tidier solution than having multiple outdoor units.
The indoor units can all be different
A multi-head split system is a very versatile option as all of the indoor units can be different. Say you want a super quiet unit for a small home office, but a higher capacity unit that matches the aesthetic of your lounge room, this is completely doable!
You can choose from a range of indoor units including:
Bulkhead concealed
This unit fits into the ceiling with only the suction air and discharge grilles visible.Ceiling cassette
A ceiling mounted option for when there’s no walls for a split system or no ceiling spaces for a ducted.Floor console
A less intrusive option than a wall mounted system as they are installed against the wall at ground level.
Wall mounted
Installed on a wall and comes in a variety of stylish options.
Each unit can be independently controlled
A great feature of multi-head split system air conditioning is having the ability to control the temperature of each indoor unit individually to suit all comfort levels. The units also do not need to be running at the same time.
Wi-Fi control
Wi-Fi control gives you the ability to control your air conditioning system with the touch of a button on your smartphone. Using an app, you can control each individual indoor unit. So, if you just want to turn the heating on in the lounge room before you get home, no problem!
The Mitsubishi Electric Wi-Fi Control app controls everything from turning your units on and off and changing modes, temperatures and fans speeds.

Multi-head split system vs split system
The main difference between these two systems is the element of the one outdoor unit and how many indoor units can be connected to it. However, it is important to mention that in some cases a multi-head split system can’t simultaneously run all of the indoor units at their full capacity as the efficiency decreases due to the size of the outdoor unit. This is because the outdoor unit is not big enough for all of the indoor units. Separate split systems would be able to run at full capacity.
Multi-head split system vs ducted
A ducted system is great for cooling and heating an entire house. Unlike a multi-head split system, you don’t have to visit each room of the house to turn on the air conditioning. It can be operated from one controller. It is a discreet, whole home solution.
Maintenance of your multi-head split system
Your multi-head split system should be serviced yearly. Services are carried out by a professional air conditioning technician to ensure your air conditioning system is running at it’s best. A service will keep your air conditioning efficient, safe and running as long as it should.
Maintenance you can do yourself
A multi-head split system has filters which require cleaning for each indoor unit. Depending on how often your units get used, these should be cleaned every 3-6 months. The filters can easily be cleaned and it is something you can do yourself if you know what you are doing. A qualified air conditioning technician can do the job for you if you prefer.
What multi-head split system do I need?
Deciding what multi-head split system you need can be tricky, especially if you are trying to work it out without the help of a qualified air conditioning technician.
